Nice find! :) Interesting.

At least in the Western world (that's what most Indian's follow), "The Season" officially ends on the 6th of Jan (or for convenience the Sunday after that). But people let it linger on!

Like over here, I still get to see a lot of un-removed Christmas decoration all over the place.

Oh, I didn't know about the Jan. 6 thing. However, I guess it makes sense. A week after New Year's Day, very nearly. Interesting!

Actually the 6th of Jan is the feast of the "Epiphany". The date it is considered the three Kings (or Wise Men) came to visit baby Jesus. But that's according to the Western Church. The Orthodox (Eastern) church considers that date as Christmas itself! :)

Actually just yesterday I clicked some Christmas decorations still hanging and shining. Will send you the snap.

And ofcourse you know where the "12 days of Christmas" song came from. If you have heard it :P

Hmmm - that explains something I overheard at Dubai Intl. while we were waiting for our connecting flight back to Bengaluru. An Egyptian was mentioning that that day (happened to be Dec. 25) wasn't a holiday in Egypt and they celebrate Jan. 6 instead.

And then there is this. Couldn't make much out of it as I never heard about it before. Or I forgot about it even if I did hear it earlier.

Regarding the "12 days of Christmas" (yeah I've heard the song :)), I've actually heard about a 24-day custom called "Advent" as well. I believe that it's specific to Germany. Anyway, check this out for more details.

Yeah the Egyptian Coptic Christians, Syrians, Russian and Greek Orthodox and even some denominations of Syrian Christians in Kerala form the Eastern block which celebrate on Jan 6th.

Not sure of the Mexican traditions. There aren't many indigenous traditions as such. Many have come in from the Western world (such as Santa Claus) which my parents rarely had.

Advent is a concept everywhere. It lasts for 3-4 weeks and starts 4 Sundays before Christmas (Sunday, hence date can vary). It is more a time for spiritual, mental preparation for Christmas and also the time when you can start playing/singing carols :). Ofcourse now it has become commercialised and also means start of the shopping season!
